Skirt Chasing

My side trip at the Best Western hadn’t taken very long, so I got to the shop about twenty minutes before we were due to open. Sometimes Archie would be there before me, but today he hadn’t shown up yet.

Just as well. I was feeling more off-balance after my visit with the Havens than I probably had any right to be, and I knew I needed some downtime before Archie made his appearance. Yes, he’d become a lot less prickly after turning back into a man — and entering into a relationship with Victoria Parrish — but he still had an uncanny knack for saying exactly the right thing to get my hackles up.

Good thing I loved him like the brother I’d never had.

We’d moved the shop’s safe out of the apartment and down to the storeroom, mostly so I wouldn’t have to disturb Archie if I got in early to work and wanted to stock the cash register. I entered the combination and took the little bag of small bills and coins over to the counter and started slipping the various denominations into their designated spots in the register. This was the sort of task I’d memorized a long time ago, and so I could let my thoughts wander while I worked.

What exactly was going on with the Havens? Had I interrupted them in the middle of an argument?

That didn’t feel right. The energy between them was super-jangly, but it felt more as though the tension sprang from something farther back in the past than a recent squabble.

What, then?

I pulled out my phone and glanced at the time. Nine fifty-one. Archie would probably be coming downstairs at any minute, which meant I didn’t have a lot of time.

Time for what?

Getting some answers.

A quick rummage in my purse produced the little garnet pendulum I carried with me all the time. It wasn’t my favorite — that honor remained with the fluorite piece that had a place of honor on my altar — but it would have to do.

Divination mats lay on a display table nearby the register, and I snagged one of them — the pretty piece with a luna moth printed in the middle and the various answers written around it — and laid it down on the counter.

Yes and no answers worked best when you were trying to do a quick pendulum scry, so I fixed a single question in my mind.

Are Chelsea and Robert Haven having marital problems?

The pendulum swung back and forth, then slowed, coming to a definite stop on a single word.

Yes.

Maybe it wasn’t something that required a pendulum to figure out, but I had to start somewhere.

The follow-up question flowed naturally from the first one.

Are their problems connected to Life Springs Church?

Once again, the pendulum etched a few graceful arcs above the divining board before stopping on “yes.”

Interesting. Was it only that they weren’t the kind of couple who did well spending the majority of their time together, or was there something else
